Why consider a finance career in the third sector?

Why consider a finance career in the third sector?

Every day we speak to candidates who have decided to step into the third sector, either by transitioning from a commercial position or as a first step on the career ladder. Having a career with this sense of purpose is becoming increasingly sought after and we can see this reflected in the charity and not-for-profit job markets.

Because of our work in the third sector, we have a comprehensive idea of the benefits it offers to candidates. But we also know why finance roles in charitable organisations, in particular, can offer candidates significantly increased job satisfaction levels. So, in case you are weighing up your options, we want you to know too.

The best of both worlds

There is a perception that by taking a role in the charity sector you are ‘trading in’ a faster paced working environment for a slower one. This however is completely misplaced. Charities or not-for-profit organisations need reliable and capable financial departments, and therefore your skills as a finance professional are in high demand. This gives you the opportunity to not only carve out an exciting and fast-paced career path but also one which fits with your values.

Your role is crucial

We’ve spoken before about how a career in the charity sector can give you a sense of fulfilment by working towards a goal greater than your own. But going beyond this, there is something especially rewarding about being in a finance role in a third sector organisation as your role is truly fundamental to the success of the mission of the charity.

Not-for-profits and charities are reliant on crucial funds to carry out their work. So being able to correctly navigate funding, grants, donations and gift aid is not only critical to their mission but also ensures that they are compliant with the charity commission. The beneficiaries of these causes are reliant on the charity, which is helping them to be financially sound, therefore a well-run, stable finance department is fundamental in ensuring that their vital impact on the lives of beneficiaries can continue.

Work with like-minded people

In a commercial organisation, the only commonality that you share with your colleagues may be simply working in the same company. But, by pursuing a career in the third sector, you know that you already share a common desire to help others.

Working environments aren't driven by lining shareholder’s pockets but by a shared pursuit in improving the lives of beneficiaries. What’s more, working with sometimes limited budgets tends to require creative thinkers and problem-solvers who are always looking for ways to improve processes for the common cause – so you’re likely to be on the same page.

Diverse and varied work

Third sector careers are very often varied, flexible and offer opportunities for individuals to work on a wide range of projects, campaigns and initiatives which may sit outside of a candidate’s original job description and allow them to develop new skill sets and liaise with different team members, helping to strengthen abilities such as communication. As a result, employers are on the hunt for candidates who have a get-up-and-go attitude and are happy to get stuck in. Not only because they make for strong employees but also because the often-reactive nature of charity work can require staff to think on their feet and take on tasks as and when they arise.

Having a say

One of the reasons that employees give for leaving a commercial organisation is the feeling of being just another ‘cog’ in a wheel, unable to have a say outside of their station or be able to practice autonomy. But within a not-for-profit or charity, harnessing the ideas and ambitions of individuals at every level is central to success. In their relentless pursuit of the cause, third sector employers are often open to any idea that might take them closer to that goal and you’ll likely have more opportunities to have your voice heard.

Taking a finance role in the third sector offers a brilliant combination of fast-paced, varied work and an opportunity to add greater meaning to your work and for giving your career a deeper purpose. Due to the importance of an effective finance department, you can make a real difference to their work and be essential to their growth.
